The Brighton & Hove Primary Schools Half Marathon takes place on Saturday 22nd June 2019 and the organisers are looking forward to welcoming hundreds of children for the grand finale of their cumulative half marathon.

Primary school children from across Brighton & Hove and East Sussex will come together to run the final 1.1 miles of their Schools Half Marathon at Withdean Athletics Stadium, having run the first 12 miles at school over the course of the spring and summer terms.

Almost 300 children are confirmed to take part so far, with participating schools including Woodingdean Primary School, Downs View Hollingdean, Smarden Primary School, Hamsey Community Primary School and St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School.

Withdean Athletics Stadium is a popular facility for local schools and race day is ideally timed to take place in the summer term, on 22nd June. On the day itself, the youngsters will be treated to a full race experience, including race bibs, a marshalled 1.1-mile route, music, commentator and a finish line gantry. It will be a fantastic finale to their Schools Half Marathon challenge, with a well-earned medal and carton of water awaiting all finishers

The Schools Half Marathon is very much an inclusive and non-competitive challenge for children of all abilities, offering plenty of incentives along the way to keep the youngsters motivated and encouraging healthy, life-changing habits.

The first official Schools Half Marathon took place in June 2018 in Shropshire as part of Shrewsbury Half Marathon weekend. Schools Half Marathon is now a stand alone event and part of the nationwide Schools Running Movement.

The 2019 Shropshire Primary Schools Half Marathon welcomed 1,800 children from 32 schools, and further events taking place in 2019 include Telford & Wrekin (15th June), Stockport (1st July) and West Sussex (14th July).

Organisers UK Run Events have recently confirmed a three-year partnership with leading ethical water brand One Water, with further partnerships to be announced soon.

Schools Half Marathon Race Director Joe Williams commented, “We are thrilled to launch the Brighton & Hove Primary Schools Half Marathon and to have secured the excellent stadium at Withdean for race day in June. We are delighted to welcome five schools already and have received interest from many more. It is fantastic to get local primary school children started on their very own half marathon challenge and reward them along the way as they complete their miles. For youngsters as young as 4 through to 11 years old, Schools Half Marathon is a great way to get kids outside and away from screens, with the incentive of a fun, shared activity and an exciting end goal.”

The Brighton & Hove Primary Schools Half Marathon takes place at Withdean Athletics Stadium on Saturday 22nd June at 9am. Friends, family and supporters are welcome to cheer on the young runners.
