The most dominant ski racer on the planet is constantly questioning her talents—especially after such a challenging start to her Olympic performance this week in Beijing. Just two days after crashing out of the GS, Shiffrin, the best slalom racer of all time, failed to finish the Olympic slalom.

Many racing fans and spectators were critical of the media’s harsh commentary around the mistakes, feeling that announcers focused too heavily on the DNFs over the fact that the two-time Olympic gold medalist and six-time World Champion has won 71 World Cups, which puts her behind only Lindsey Vonn and Ingemar Stenmark on the all-time list.

But unlike fellow American skiing stars Vonn and Bode Miller, Shiffrin isn’t known for her aggressive, brute approach to the course. Instead, she’s lauded for her perfect form, tactical brilliance, and workaholic approach to training—all of which she said after the GS, she’s now questioning. But when you watch the latest episode in Outside’s five-part docuseries, Mikaela Shiffrin: Passion & Purpose, you’ll be reminded Shiffrin has ultimately found success in the moments she’s embraced her self-doubt rather than avoid it.
