At Women’s Running, we are celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8th by doing what we know best: running. We are choosing to dedicate our runs to a woman who has inspired us or been an influence in our lives. It’s also the culmination of our first 360 YOU quarter with pro mentor Mary Cain, and we’re celebrating with a 5K—and we want you to join us!
This is a day where we can celebrate who we are as women, the journeys we have taken, and recognize the people who are part of our village and sisterhood.
We would love for you to run with us virtually on International Women’s Day. Share photos of your runs on social media, tagging @womensrunningmagazine with the hashtags #womensday #IWD #wr360you and #womensupportingwomen.
For some inspiration, here’s who we have chosen to run for on International Women’s Day. Join us by lacing up and giving gratitude.

Mary Cain, Atalanta NYC
Where: All over—it could be a swim, bike, or run!
Who: I dedicate my workout on International Women’s Day to my wonderful team at Atalanta NYC. I’m proud to work with such an amazing group of women who believe in empowering the next generation of girls. It also takes a brave woman to join a new group that is challenging the status quo of pro running, so I appreciate everyone who has sponsored, donated, and cheered on this crew.

Jamie Morrissey, Atalanta NYC
Where: New York at the track. I love when a celebratory day lines up with one of my favorite training days of the week! I am lucky enough to have a track workout on March 8th.
Who: I will hopefully be warming up with Aoibhe (see below!), and I am so grateful to have her and Mary [Cain] to attack some lofty goals.
Aoibhe Richardson, Atalanta NYC
Where: New York City, at the track doing a workout with Jamie
Who: I want to dedicate this run to Ashling Murphy, a 22 year old Irish woman who was attacked and killed while out for a run this past January. This tragic event struck a chord with women everywhere, and sparked demands for an end to violence against women with many people using the hashtag #shewasgoingforarun on social media. As someone with three younger sisters who are also runners, I want them to be able to go out for a run—whenever and wherever they please—without fearing for their safety. We all have the right to go out for a run—whenever and wherever we please—on this International Women’s day and every other day.
Melanie Mitchell, Brand Director
Where: Denver, Colorado. I am going to run up high! The 5K will include a trail on top of a dam overlooking the Denver skyline and the Rocky Mountains. The view is inspiring and I always have good thoughts up there.
Who: My mum. She died a few months ago and I still feel her absence like a dagger. She was a sweet little Scottish lady who, while gentle in her manner, was fierce in her determination. I carry that with me every day. She has made me who I am.
Jessica Campbell-Salley, Managing Editor
Where: There’s a great loop trail right out my front door that I’ll tackle with the run-walk method (and my two Australian Shepherds). It’s got lots of elevation change and wonderful views of the Colorado foothills (and lots of lots of mud this time of year!).
Who: I dedicate this run to my older sister, Kristin, who always inspires me to treat myself and my body with grace and is a wonderful motivator for keeping active.
Malissa Rodenburg, Associate Editor
Where: Washington State: Alki beach trail, overlooking the Puget Sound. There is nothing I love more than getting lost in nature while moving my body. Here you can always find me dangerously looking over my shoulder while I run to scout out seals, whales, otters, herons, cormorants, and other creatures who are drawn together by one massive body of water.
Who: Becky, Christen, Krista. I didn’t get to grow up with sisters, but the ones who have joined my family have taught me a lot. When I’m plagued by fear at what my next move might be, I look at them and how they have unapologetically staked their place in the world and I feel like everything will be alright and that I can do hard things, too.
Natalie McCollum, Culture and Communications Editor, Outside Inc.
Where: Downtown Boulder, Colorado
Who: My mom, Judy—not only did she inspire me at a young age to make movement a part of my life that I love, but she also has been working tirelessly as a first-responder nurse throughout the pandemic. She deserves more kudos than I can give!
Kendra Perkins, eCommerce Manager, Outside Inc.
Where: A local trail in Bend, Oregon
Who: My best friend, Emily. She inspires me every day to be my best self and is a champion for strong, independent, hardworking women everywhere.
