The Best Sports Bras for Running 2022:The average UK women’s breast size is 36D, so a supportive bra for running is essential for most of us. Having the right running bra can prevent the discomfort of bouncing, chafing and sweat pooling in places it shouldn’t, but it also helps those who are bigger busted avoid the breast tissue damage that can occur when you run unsupported, leading to breast pain during or after runs.
Research from Portsmouth University’s Research Group in Breast Health found that breasts move up to 15cm when running. And in 2020 when Brooks Running conducted research with the same university, they found that when you run in a bra with poor support it can add an extra mile to your marathon by shortening your stride up to 4cm.
A good fitting running bra should keep your breasts in place while running, minimising movement. Like with a good fitting everyday bra, there should be no digging into your skin, breasts should sit comfortably inside the cup without spilling out and you should also be able to fit two fingers under the band (if it has an adjustable hook and eye clasp, on the loosest setting, so that as the band naturally stretches with wear it remains supportive).
One tip for making sure you’ve found the perfect fit is to jump and mimic running movements when you’re trying it on, testing it meets these requirements when you’re in motion too.
