CGEAR Sand-Free Mat

An outdoor mat is something that every van lifer finds useful. A sand mat keeps sand and dirt from getting tracked inside and creates a nice “patio” space for hanging out. This CGear Sand-Free Mat is my favorite because it allows sand and dirt to filter through (rather than pile up on top), it packs down small, and it’s what I use when I set up camp outside my van.

RTIC Soft Pack Cooler

Investing in (or gifting) a quality cooler can make a world of difference in van life where temperatures can change rapidly and access to ice isn’t always easy. Having a small, portable cooler is key for being able to take food and drinks with you when you’re away from your van — think beach trips, kayaking, etc. We love the RTIC Soft Pack Cooler which is small enough to stash away easily, easy to transport and keeps things really cold.

Rumpl Blanket

Rumpl Blankets are our favorite van life comforters because they’re snuggly and soft yet still durable for the road. I’ve used mine for 4 years and I can’t believe how well it’s held up! The blankets come in several different materials including recycled synthetic, a warmer NanoLoft synthetic, and down. You can also choose from a wide variety of colors and styles. Since they’re water and dirt-resistant and can be thrown into the wash, they’re one of our favorite gifts in general.

West Paw Heyday Dog Bed

If you’re traveling with a dog in the van, it’s nice for them to have a comfy space of their own. My dog Charlie likes to hang out in his West Paw Heyday Dog Bed between the two front seats. Handmade in Montana, this dog bed has a soft, textured top and a micro-suede bottom that is totally machine-washable (a huge plus, especially in van life). Plus, this bed folds in half in case you need to stash it away.

Sea to Summit Hanging Toiletry Bag

A fundamental ‘rule’ of van life is to keep your belongings as organized as possible to prevent clutter and mess, which can really cramp a small space (like a van). That’s why we love the Sea to Summit Hanging Toiletry Bag where you can store all of your toiletries and showering essentials. This bag comes with a little mirror, has plenty of pockets to keep things organized, and it’s available in two sizes.

EcoFlow RIVER Portable Power Station

Whether you work from the road or you’re spending an extended time off-grid, having a portable power station like the EcoFlow RIVER can be really helpful, even as a backup to your house battery system. This power station is designed to charge a range of electronics from phones to computers and can even be used with some kitchen appliances. This is the power station that I and BFT team member (and full time van lifer) Courtney use. It’s our top pick because it charges very fast – from 0-80% in 1 hour when plugged into AC power.

Ruggable Rug

A Ruggable Rug is great for van life because it can be washed and dried in a regular washing machine. Keeping the van floor clean is an almost impossible task, but with a durable, washable rug like Ruggable, it’s a lot easier. Plus you can always remove it to shake it outside. I use a Ruggable Rug in my Sprinter and with two dogs, I couldn’t imagine my van without it.

Scrubba Wash Bag

Keep your clothes clean with this clever Scrubba Wash Bag. It’s essentially a large 3L bag with a modern take on an old-fashioned washboard. Simply fill the bag up with warm water and a bit of biodegradable soap, then ‘scrub’ your clothes clean on the washboard nodules. The Scrubba helps save time and money and it also doubles as a dry bag, perfect for taking out on the water.

Eureka Ignite Camp Stove

It’s nice to have a portable camp stove along for cooking outside, even if you have a built-in stove top in your van. We love the Eureka Ignite Plus Stove (which fits two 12in pans). It has two powerful burners, great simmering capability, and a solid construction that will help you cook up delicious camp meals for years. Aeropress Go Travel Coffee Press

The AeroPress coffee maker has been my go-to method for making that perfect cup of joe for nearly 10 years. The AeroPress Go travel coffee press is super compact, takes less than a minute to make a cup of coffee, and the process results in a rich, smooth flavor that I haven’t been able to achieve with drip coffee or a french press. Cleanup is also a cinch, which is essential, especially when you’re in a van. You can read my full review of the Aeropress Go here.

Epic Water Filters Nalgene Bottle

Ditch single-use water bottles in the van with an Epic Water Filters water bottle. These reusable water bottles come with a replaceable filter that filters out over 70 contaminants including microplastics, metals, and even some harmful chemicals. Since van lifers are often filling up water from public sources like gas stations and public parks that may have old pipes, it’s really important to filter your water, and this is one of the simplest ways to do so.

If you already have a reusable water bottle, you can get a Hydro Flask-compatible lid and filter or a Nalgene-compatible lid and filter, and if you’re traveling off the grid, you could also purchase the Outdoor Adventure Filter, which also removes bacteria, viruses, and protozoa.

Trash Grabber

Although this may not fall under “van life entertainment”, a Trash Grabber is still a great gift for van lifers. We use one for cleaning up trash left behind at campsites (one of the less glamorous parts of van life). It’s foldable so it can easily be stowed away in a drawer. With trash is becoming an increasing problem as more people are getting outdoors, we want to make sure we’re doing our part to keep public lands clean and open for all to enjoy.

Pickleball Paddles

Pickleball is a blast and a fun way to get exercise on the road on the days you don’t feel like hiking. Courts are popping up all over the place, so we like to keep a set of paddles and a few balls in the van. They hardly take up any room compared to other outdoor and sports equipment and it’s also a great way to meet people on the road.

Safety, Recovery & Navigation Gifts for Van Life

While not the most “fun” items on our list, these safety, recovery, and navigation gifts for van lifers are USEFUL and will be much appreciated.

Max Trax Recovery Boards

Driving down dirt roads usually leads to the most beautiful places, but sometimes soft sand, loose dirt, or mud can cause you to get stuck. Having a way to self-recover is really important, especially if you’re miles and miles away from civilization (or don’t have cell service). Max Trax recovery boards assist you in getting unstuck, and are one of the most useful safety gifts you could give a van lifer!

Benchmark Road Atlas

Benchmark Road Atlases are my go-to paper maps and make a great gift for van lifers. They show recreation activities, have categorized listings, and also show public land ownership lines, and backroads, and differentiate between 2wd and 4wd roads. They’re super useful to have for each state you’ll be traveling in.

Air Compressor

An air compressor is another essential item for van life safety and recovery. With the miles we put on our vehicles, tire pressure is something to monitor closely. Airing down your tires before driving on soft surfaces (like sand) helps you avoid getting stuck, however, you need a way to air back up your tires when you get back to pavement. A compact air compressor like this one is the way to go for ensuring you can always air up your tires.

Hulkman Jump Starter

Waking up to a dead car battery is never fun, but when you’re out on National Forest land without another car in sight? That can be really scary. For peace of mind, we always carry a backup car battery jump starter – which requires no other vehicle for a jump! This compact device is about the size of a Nalgene and truly worth carrying in a van.

Garmin InReach Mini

The Garmin InReach Mini 2 is our pick for the best all-around van life safety. This is a two-way communication device that can be used even when you don’t have cell service. I carry this when I’m hiking and it’s always accessible in the van. Last winter, my boyfriend Ryan and I woke up to a dead car battery in below-freezing temperatures in Idaho – and we didn’t have cell service or a way to jump ourselves. Luckily, I was able to use my Garmin to text my Dad the details of where we were so he could call help for us.

Birdie Alarm Keychain

While unwanted attention – or worse, an attack – is unlikely, it’s best to be prepared, especially for solo female van lifers. We recommend attaching a Birdie Alarm to your keychain in case of an emergency which sets off a loud siren and blinking lights to help deter an attack. This is a great gift for better peace of mind on the road.
