How to Choose the Best Goggles for You

Goggles should be one of your top priorities when gearing up for the season, not a last-minute grab on the way to the slopes. Whether you ski or ride, the right goggles protect your eyes from sun, wind, and snow—and are equally important on bright days with relentless glare and low-light sessions with wind-driven flakes. So don’t spend a single day squinting, get stuck with dark lenses on a storm day, or go in early because of foggy lenses. Get a great pair of goggles instead.

Factors like fit, lens type, and ventilation all need to be considered when picking the right ones for you. Here’s what to look for, and why Dragon Alliance has made one of one of the season’s best models.

Find a Good Fit

Goggles should fit snugly, with no gaps between the foam and your face, but shouldn’t feel like they’re squeezing your cheeks. Try out different models and genders or even some kids’ sizes—some pairs are better suited for larger or smaller faces. Try them with your helmet on to ensure they fit comfortably and can be properly adjusted. Ideally, your goggles are so comfortable you don’t notice you’re wearing them.

Choose Your Lens Type and Tint

The impulse to pick out goggles based on aesthetics is understandable, but a good look needs to go hand-in-hand with good performance. Lighter lenses (often yellow, pink, or green) allow more light to pass through, which makes them the right choice for overcast storm days. Darker lenses (often red, brown, or gray) are perfect for those sunny, bluebird days.

Most goggles on the market offer total UV protection from three types of rays (UVA, UVB, and UVC), but always double-check. Also, consider if they are polarized, which reduces glare, and photochromic, which changes the tint based on how light or dark it is outside. Lumalens, a color technology developed by Dragon Alliance, helps with depth perception and clarity, which is ideal for going bell to bell. “By fine tuning the lens colors, we’ve engineered snow-specific tints that increase contrast, clarity, and depth perception, all while reducing eye fatigue,” Shay Williams, a Dragon Product Design Specialist, says. Less eye fatigue means you can stay out there later and longer.

Get Built-In Anti-Fog Features

Fogging is just about the worst thing that can happen while you’re ripping down a run and poor goggle ventilation can contribute to this annoying problem. You want goggles that are double-layered, have an anti-fog coating, and have wide vents to create airflow. Old or low-end goggles may not have that fog coating, or perhaps it’s worn down.

The new RVX Mag OTG from Dragon Alliance has top-of-the-line anti-fog coating and armored venting to keep lenses clear all day. OTG means they’re also compatible for shredders who wear prescription glasses. No anti-fog spray or wipes—or early quitting—necessary here.

Have the Option to Change-Out Your Lenses

Often it’s bluebird in the morning so you want dark lenses, but then a storm moves in and you’re left struggling to see. In that moment you wish you could easily swap in light lenses, and for that you need interchangeables, like the magnetic ones of Dragon Alliance’s all-new RVX Mag OTG goggle.

Dragon Alliance designers found that interchangeable lenses were either fast or secure, but never both, so they worked with athletes to develop a magnetic lens changing system with a Swiftlock lever for extra security. “The shape of the RVX Mag with the easy lens change means these frames work well for me. The magnetic feature for putting the lens in is exciting and makes the process a whole lot easier,” professional skier Jossi Wells says. “I tend to run one set of frames all winter and carry a grip of fresh lenses with me for when I tomahawk down a backcountry jump landing and need fresh ones!”
