When the term, “ski bum” was coined, it was predicated on the fact that a person could go to a resort town and reside there, working just enough to afford their rent, with enough leftover for a 12-pack of cheap beer. But the term doesn’t work in 2022; you can’t be a “bum” at the rate you have to work in most mountain towns in order to afford to live there. While housing affordability has long been an issue in the mountains, since 2020, the situation has gotten even worse. The pandemic and the resulting housing market upswing, WFH migration from the cities, inflation, and all of that have aggressively priced out locals–i.e. the people that are the heart of mountain towns in more ways than one, including operating local shops, restaurants, hotels, resorts, etc. In Tahoe, the issue is raging and the lack of affordable housing is threatening the community in an enormous way. It is a housing crisis.
So, a group of filmmakers who call Tahoe home have made Room and Board: A Tahoe Housing Crisis Documentary. Watch the trailer and stay tuned for the full film.
