Some lures go beyond the conventional and take on an over-the-top appearance. You may be standing in the tackle aisle wondering, “Why would this thing catch any fish?” But perhaps we should ask instead, why wouldn’t it? The new FishLab BBZ Bio-Rat is one such lure to raise these questions, and in this video, Matt Nelson puts any doubts to rest.
A Closeup Look At The Bio-Rat Topwater Lure
The FishLab BBZ Bio-Rat is a collaboration between BBZ Baits lure designer Bill Siemantel and FishLab Product Manager Mike Bennett. We first caught a glimpse of the Bio-Rat at ICAST 2022.
Like other attendees, we were stopped in our tracks by the creative lure standing out from the crowd. The detail of the lure was not only humorous but impressive. The angry teeth, claws, little feet, and rat tail.
The goal, of course, is not just to look fun but also to fish well. FishLab notes on their site, “These baits can be fished fast or slow, on a straight wind or a walk-the-dog style retrieve. The baits come standard with an easy-to-swap replaceable tail section as well as custom spinning feet that give off a huge splash and gurgling sounds drawing in big bites from a great distance.”
A Field Test For Big Fish
The spinning feet stood out to Nelson as well.
“I have the bigger 10-inch version in my hand here,” Nelson explains, walking through the lure. “If you look at the back, he’s got the two spinning feet like a double-plopper-style lure. So it should make a lot of commotion to hopefully draw in those big bites.”
Nelson is no stranger to fishing obscure lures for big game, like a rubber duck looking topwater bait. Hauling in a monstrous muskie with the Bio-Rat, Nelson shows these absurd-looking topwater lures work once again. Not to mention, they give your tackle box a fun-loving vibe while doing so.
