In an attempt to not lose our kayaks on the interstate, we can often overdo it. Getting boat rash from bumping the jetty in an epic fight makes for a good story. But bending your hull or pulling off a grab handle because you cranked down on those ratchet straps doesn’t sound as heroic. It also risks some irreparable damage to your craft. Hoover uses a set of paddling-specific tie down straps from NRS. This style of strap is easy to use and still provides a mechanical advantage to secure your kayak without over-tightening. Hoover also takes an interesting approach by running through the scupper rather than the grab handle. Lastly, he uses a strap on each side of the kayak to keep it from sliding in one direction or another.
