There’s a new star of The Fifty Project, and it’s Cody Townsend’s wife.
In the latest episode of The Fifty, Elyse Saugstad, Townsend’s partner and badass skier in her own right, makes a guest appearance to help check off line 37: 7 Steps of Paradise on Youngs Peak in B.C. While it’s not the biggest objective Townsend and his crew have faced throughout The Fifty, 7 Steps of Paradise still amounts to a 16-mile day with 6,000 feet of climbing. You try doing that on two hours of sleep, without much training, all while keeping up with the likes of legendary ski mountaineer and king of Type II fun, Greg Hill.
Because that’s exactly what Saugstad did. As a new mom to Indy, her 6-month-old son with Townsend, Saugstad hasn’t had a chance to get out much in recent months. And when she has, it’s been between feeding and nap times and likely on very little sleep. So this bluebird day in the Revelstoke backcountry is exactly what the doctor ordered, and Saugstad crushes those orders.
There’s no horrendous weather, over-the-top puckering terrain, or (obvious) suffering in this episode of The Fifty. Instead, we continue to see Townsend’s evolution as a ski mountaineer turned family man, and we get an important reminder that adventurous parents can and should continue to do what they love.
