First look: Oakley’s New MOD 7 Helmet

Fact: you need to protect your head while skiing or riding. Fiction: all helmets are uncomfortable and cumbersome. Proof: The new MOD 7, which ushers in a new era of high-performance protection for your noggin.

Oakley used input from some of the world’s best athletes to create the MOD 7, a helmet that eliminates the need for goggles entirely. Oakley’s new proprietary Secure-Connect technology smoothly integrates optics and protection by magnetically connecting and securing the visor to the helmet. The integrated visor uses Oakley’s color- and contrast-enhancing Prizm™ Lens Technology, which allows you to see sharp contrast and detail.

The MOD 7 also sports Oakley’s Modular Brim system. Three interchangeable brims (large, medium, and small, all included) swap on and off in moments.

For safety, the helmet incorporates the Multi-Directional Impact Protection System (MIPS). The innovative MIPS design permits movement between the outer and inner shells of the helmet, absorbing the force of an impact. 

Ventilation is also key. Air flows up through the bottom of the attached goggles into the vents under the brim, and then moves out the other vents throughout the helmet. Two vents on top of the helmet can be opened or closed when temperatures change, as can two on the helmet’s back, designed to reduce the flow of cold air when you’re moving fast. The venting options mean you can choose sweat-wicking warmth or cooling air, and your goggles always stay fog-free.

The fit is snug and comfortable. Cupped ear coverings, with a thick layer of padding around the edges, add essential warmth. When you buckle the chin strap’s glove-friendly FiDLOCK magnetic connector, your ears feel insulated but not crushed. All this and the MOD 7 weighs just 1.23 pounds.
