In 1974, Casio released its first timepiece and in 1995 introduced the PRO TREK line of Triple Sensor watches for outdoor enthusiasts. The company’s engineers have been raising the bar on outdoor timepieces ever since. The new solar-powered PRO TREK PRG340, the latest in the line, represents a new benchmark: an adventure-ready watch designed with sustainability in mind.

What does sustainability mean for a watch? The PRO TREK PRG340’s case, case back, band, and rotating bezel are all made with biomass plastics, using raw materials from castor seeds and corn. Produced with renewable resources, biomass plastics can help reduce carbon emissions and support the creation of a circular economy. The bezel, which bears more impact than other parts, is made with a newly developed biomass formula that’s exceptionally strong. Additionally, the PRG340 is equipped with a Tough Solar charging system, which powers the watch using light from the sun, fluorescent lamps, or other sources. With a full charge and the power-saving function enabled, the battery can last up to seven months under normal usage.

But these eco-credentials wouldn’t matter if the PRG340 couldn’t help you achieve your adventure goals. It can. The watch features Triple Sensor technology, which measures compass bearings, barometric pressure, temperature, and altitude at the push of a button. For alpine travel and trekking, precisely measuring elevation and tracking and recording changes will help you stay safely on course. Same for the compass function: the rotating bezel makes it simple to record readings, and the movable lugs let the watch case and band lie flat on a paper map to help check your location and chart a course. Also important: tracking changes in barometric pressure and temperature can help you anticipate and prepare for changing weather.

The PRG340 rounds out these features with details that make it especially user-friendly. The duplex LCD with its dual layers displays compass graphics in a large, easy-to-read format. Beneath the compass layer, the bottom LCD layer displays the time and other measurements. The full-auto LED backlight makes it all highly legible—and switches off with a flick of the wrist. This and the optional power-saving function can be set to conserve battery life. Add 100-meter water resistance and five alarms for those alpine starts, and you have a watch that will keep you going whenever and wherever you go.
