Hellen Obiri won the 2023 Boston Marathon on Monday, finishing in 2:21:38, in one of the most closely contested races in recent years.
Tamane Beriso of Ethiopia was second in 2:21:50, and Lonah Salpeter was third in 2:21:57.
On a soggy day in Boston, it was still anybody’s race in the lead group of 11 athletes through 30K, cut down to seven runners with four miles left. Emma Bates, 30, was the lone American to hang with the contenders, often taking command of the pack with 10K left to go—Bates finished fifth in 2:22:10, her new personal best.
Prior to lining up on Monday, Bates indicated she was confident in her training, calling it the best marathon preparation she’s ever had. She placed seventh at the 2022 World Championships in 2:23:18, which was her previous personal best. She trains with Team Boss in Boulder, Colorado, under coach Joe Bosshard.
Obiri, 33, of Kenya trains with coach Dathan Ritzenhein in Boulder. She is a world champion 5,000 meter specialist who moved up to the marathon last fall, debuting in New York City.
Beriso, 31, of Ethiopia, came into the 2023 Boston Marathon with the fastest personal best by a long shot—she ran 2:14:58 at the 2022 Valencia Marathon.
Salpeter, 34, represents Israel, where she is the national record-holder (2:17:45) and was the bronze medalist at the 2022 World Championships marathon. She placed second at the 2022 New York City Marathon.
Obiri earns $150,000 for the victory, Beriso takes $75,000 for second, and Salpeter takes home $40,000 for third.
