The season that won’t quit continues to bestow its gifts on skiers. We’re heading into the second week in May, when summer operations should be ramping and visions on golf balls and stand-up paddleboards begin to dance in our heads. Yet a handful of ski areas have announced that they are actually reopening for skiing thanks to new storms cycling through the West.
Utah’s Sundance Resort will spin lifts in May for the first in its history when it reopens for skiing on Saturday and Sunday, May 12 and 13. The resort already enjoyed a bonus weekend in April. Open terrain will be on the Bearclaw area’s intermediate and advanced slopes, with more runs possible depending on conditions.
Also reopening this weekend is Lee Canyon, the closest ski area to Las Vegas. After closing on May 7, Lee Canyon will fire up the Bluebird lift from May 12 to 14. Lift tickets will be $25 on Friday, and $29 on Saturday and Sunday.
Lee Canyon shares owners Mountain Capital Partners with Purgatory, which has also announced that it’s reopening for one last weekend. This is only the second time in the resort’s 58 years that it’s been open this late in the season. The ski area will run limited lifts—no beginner terrain will be open—on May 13 and 14, and lift tickets will be only $29.
Finally. Utah’s Brighton shuttered for the season on April 30, then promptly reopened on May 5. The resort adjacent to Solitude—which has been open and plans to stay open through Memorial Day—will run the Milly Express from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Groomed runs and a terrain park are on tap, and the $129 May Pass is good until the lifts grind to a halt—for real this time.
